Pathways to Recovery - HMP Belmarsh

  • 16 May 2014
On Thursday 15th May 2014, eight offenders at HMP Belmarsh were celebrated for their successful completion of CRI’s respected Pathways to Recovery Peer Mentor Programme. The Peer Mentor scheme delivers accredited training over six weeks to offenders with previous drug or alcohol misuse, which enables them to become mentors to newer offenders entering the prison. It has been shown to dramatically increase the self-esteem of Peer Mentors themselves, whilst providing an inspiring example to others with drug and alcohol problems.

A peer mentor programme at HMP Belmarsh is raising hopes for a better life outside prison.  In addition to volunteering within the prison, peer mentors who complete the Pathways to Recovery Peer Mentor programme can now volunteer with CRI on community placements on release. These placements offer valuable work experience and a first step towards a career in social care. Two former prisoners who completed the peer mentor training are currently doing voluntary placements at a CRI project in South London, demonstrating the success of the scheme.
