Service update
Service Manager Simon
Important updates are here to enhance our stop smoking services across Newcastle, bringing more support, more options, and more ways to quit.
What's new?
We’ve recently expanded our offer to include a wider range of treatment options, including non-nicotine medications such as Varenicline (formerly Champix) and Cytisinicline, making sure more people can access the most suitable support for their needs.
We’re also encouraging use of digital support, including the Smokefree app, which provides daily motivation, progress tracking, access to trained Stop Smoking Advisors, and practical advice to help people stay on track. Those who sign up with our service can also access nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alongside this support. You can download the app here.
With upcoming changes to tobacco and vape legislation, we continue to support residents to understand these developments and access the right support at the right time.
Padlet digital resources platform
Our clients now have access to our digital resource’s platform alongside their treatment. Answering FAQs, and letting you know what to expect before your first appointment, our Padlet page is a go-to for information. With the platform you get tools and resources to help with your smokefree journey such as a cravings log, savings calculator, motivation and goals support, as well as detailed tutorials on how to use your medication. Visit our page.
Meet the team

Our team is here for you. We’re all passionate about helping our local community stop smoking and making you feel happier and healthier by achieving your quit goals.
So, let’s get to know a wonderful member of our team… Stop Smoking Advisor Grace!
Staying Smokefree - Our brand-new relapse prevention group
We have listened when clients said that 12 weeks doesn’t feel long enough. Lots of clients have noted that they need extra support, for longer, to stay smokefree and avoid relapse.
We have developed a new group which clients, past and present, can attend to make sure to stay on track. The sessions are friendly, relaxed, and supportive – and group leader Grace is a great listening ear!
The group is designed to help clients stay smokefree long term by understanding habits, triggers, and the reasons behind smoking.
In the sessions, our advisor Grace will:
- Talk about cravings, stress, and difficult moments
- Help clients understand deeply their smoking habits and root causes
- Explore emotions, routines, and triggers linked to smoking
- Share simple tools to manage triggers and cravings
- Build confidence to stay smokefree
The group will allow clients to meet others on a similar journey. This togetherness can allow for a positive, thriving community and help clients not to feel alone in their smokefree journey.
If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in this group, you can sign up via this form, or call 0191 269 1103.
Success Stories
Our clients' experiences
Here are a small selection of our team’s favourite quotes from clients, including stories about what they achieved health-wise, as well as what they spent with money saved.
“I am 7 weeks in, and I have saved so much money. I worked out I was spending £196 a week on cigarettes, which I worked out to be £10,190 a year, - that is unbelievable! That’s another holiday a year - or way more to spend on grandkids”
Stephen, who quit in 2025.
“I didn't realise how much better food tasted until I got off the baccy and could taste it all again”
- Newcastle client, who quit in Jan 2026
“I would certainly recommend your service, which has been both professional and friendly. You have helped me achieve what I had considered impossible!
- Newcastle client, who quit in Feb 2026
“My allocated adviser from the stop smoking service has been a phenomenal support. She’s helped me so much when I’ve had wobbles and has been an incredible support. The personalised, judgement free and caring way she has guided me through the challenges that stopping smoking presented has truly been invaluable.”
- Newcastle client, who quit in April 2026
“I had half my lung removed, because of a cancerous nodule, so am still breathless but can’t imagine how much worse I would be if I had continued to smoke. I feel I have more energy.”
- Jennifer, who quit in 2024

Recipe
Staying healthy and smokefree means more than just stopping smoking. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health and can help you feel at your best too.
The weather is warming up, and sometimes you just crave a Mediterranean style picky tea to feel better! Try this recipe when you feel that way – the chicken shawarma with lentil salad from BBC Good Food. You might be surprised to find lots of the ingredients already in your cupboards too.
Frying pan chicken shawarma with lentil salad
For the chicken
- 1 tsp coriander seeds
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp grated fresh nutmeg
- 1 tsp garlic granules
- 1 tsp dried chilli flakes
- ½ tsp ground cardamom
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 10 grinds black pepper
- 800g–1kg/1lb 12oz–2lb 4oz chicken thigh fillets, skin removed
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- salt
- pitta breads, toasted, to serve (optional)
For the salad
- 250g red cabbage, finely shredded
- 200g jar mixed vegetable pickles (such as turnip, carrot, cucumber or cauliflower)
- 500g cooked lentils (from a pouch or tin)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- handful fresh flatleaf parsley leaves, finely chopped
- Salt
For the chilli sauce
- 300g jar roasted red peppers
- 1 tbsp rose harissa paste
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt
For the garlic sauce
- 4 tbsp Greek-style yoghurt
- 1 garlic clove, finely grated
- 1 tbsp tahini
- 1 lemon, juice only
- pinch salt
- 200g cooked greens (such as Brussels sprouts, chard, spinach, broccoli or kale)
- salt and freshly ground black pepper
- cooked rice or naan breads, to serve
- To make the chicken, place the coriander seeds, oregano, nutmeg, garlic granules, chilli flakes, cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper in a pestle and mortar and give the mixture a good grind to break down the coriander seeds. Dust the chicken thighs all over with the spice mixture, ensuring the chicken is coated evenly. If any of the chicken is thicker than about 2.5cm/1in, give it a good bash with a rolling pin to flatten it.
- Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat. Season the chicken with salt. Add the chicken to the pan in batches to help create a really deep golden crust on the surface and to add flavour and texture. Fry the chicken for about 8 minutes on each side, then remove the pan from the heat and leave the chicken to rest for a short time before slicing into small chunks.
- To make the salad, place the red cabbage in a bowl and season with salt. Take a few tablespoons of the liquid from the pickled vegetables jar, add this to the bowl and, with your hands, give the cabbage a good scrunch to release the purple pigments and soften it a little.
- Heat the lentils in the microwave or with a few splashes of water in a saucepan on the hob. Drop the lentils into the bowl of cabbage and drizzle over the olive oil. Mix well and top with the pickled vegetables from the jar and the parsley.
- To make the chilli sauce, blend the roasted peppers, harissa paste and olive oil with a touch of salt in a food processor or blender to form a smooth, spicy chilli sauce.
- To make the garlic sauce, mix the ingredients together in a bowl, adding the lemon juice to taste.
- Serve the chicken with the salad, chilli sauce, garlic sauce and pitta breads, if preferred.
