Jake's experience with a mentor

“I had got mixed up with the wrong people and ended up committing a crime. I did not realise the consequences until I had to appear in court, and the realisation hit home. I was given a court order while awaiting my court case.

I had to attend meetings with my case worker from the HYJS every day and attend the police station once a week as part of my bail conditions. I was told about the fact that I could have a Mentor, someone who was independent of all other agencies in my life.

I agreed to give it a go, and to be honest it was the best decision I had made in a long while.

We got on straight away and she was good at listening and took time out to be with me and take me out.

She took me to an art gallery, and we used to sit and paint, she took me for walks, and a drink and chatted. She never judged me or talked down to me. I really liked going out with her. Covid hit and during this, she rang me every week to see if I was ok. My life has now changed for the better, and my Mentor played a part in that.”
