    Smoking in pregnancy - Newcastle

    How to give advice to pregnant people about smoking.

    • Session duration: 11 - 13 hours

    Community adviser training

    This is an in-depth course for people who want to learn how to provide stop smoking interventions.

    Duration

    11-13 hours. A training day, a three-hour follow-up session, and two hours shadowing a specialist advisor.

    What you’ll learn

    This is an in-depth course for people who want to learn how to provide stop smoking interventions. When you complete the course, you’ll be qualified to provide one-to-one stop smoking support and advice to an intermediate level. You’ll be able to set up a clinic, arrange for stop smoking products to be supplied and submit data to the Department of Health and the Commissioners of the Service.

    As part of the programme you’ll learn:

    - The NHS stop smoking medications on offer, their uses and side-effects
    - How to develop your communication skills to promote smoking cessation
    - How to use of monitoring documents
    - How to use a carbon monoxide monitor

    • Session duration: 2 hours

    Yearly update for intermediate advisers

    If you’re an intermediate adviser, you need to take this course annually to maintain your qualification.

    Who’s it for?

    People who work with smokers and/or their families

    Location

    What you’ll learn

    If you’re an intermediate adviser, you need to take this course annually to maintain your qualification. You should also bring your carbon monoxide monitor to be checked and calibrated. The course will bring you up-to-date on any changes in the Department of Health recommendations. This might include:

    - Changes in available drugs
    - Changes in recommendations
    - Changes in paperwork or procedures

    You will also have a chance to talk about any successes and problems that you’ve faced over the past year while reviewing the 12-week Intermediate Treatment programme.

     

    • Session duration: 3 hours

    Supported pharmacotherapy (pharmacy specific) training

    How to provide one-to-one stop smoking support.

    Who’s it for?

    Pharmacy staff who deliver interventions alongside treatments such as nicotine replacement therapy and Varenicline.

    • How to arrange for the supply of stop smoking treatment drugs
    • Submitting data to the Department of Health and the Commissioners of Service
    • Understanding NHS smoking cessation medication uses and side effects
