Book free stop smoking training sessions

    Level 1 training - Hull

    This session is for people who engage with smokers and their families in their workplace.

    The course has been designed to encourage others to make informed choices about smoking. You’ll gain a better understanding of treatment options, resources available and how to support someone who has quit.

    Once you’ve finished the course, you’ll be able to recognise the different types of smoking cessation interventions. Through group discussions, you’ll get a broader understanding of smoking in the public eye and how to refer smokers who want to quit.

    Level 2 Community Advisers Training - Hull

    This training is for people who want to become their organisation's smoking cessation ‘Community Champion’ in partnership with SmokeFree Hull.

    This session is suitable for people working in the Hull area. It's for people who want to become their organisation's smoking cessation ‘Community Champion’ in partnership with SmokeFree Hull.

    You'll be able to provide stop smoking interventions and be able to encourage others to make informed choices about smoking. You'll also learn about the treatment options, resources available and how to support someone who has quit.

    As part of the training you will cover the following topics:

    • Current stop smoking medication, uses and side-effects
    • Assessing nicotine dependence/readiness to quit
    • Understand pre-quit and post-quit assessments
    • Development of your own communication skills to promote smoking cessation
    • Use of a Carbon Monoxide monitor

    After this session, you'll shadow a specialist advisor and have an online follow up session. This will be booked at a later date. There's also a SmokeFree Hull advisor handbook that you can use.

    When you've completed the course, you will be qualified to provide one-to-one stop smoking support and advice to an intermediate level. You will be able to recognise the different types of smoking cessation interventions and how smoking affects public health. Through group discussions, you will also gain a broader understanding of smoking in the public eye and understand how to refer smokers who wish to quit to SmokeFree Hull.

    Supported Pharmacotherapy (Pharmacy-Specific) Training - Hull

    Tailored for pharmacy staff with a focus on one-to-one stop smoking support and PharmOutcomes support.

    Tailored for pharmacy staff with a focus on one-to-one stop smoking support and PharmOutcomes support – particularly around recording assessments/client interactions and tariff payment guidance.

    This three hour workshop also gives you information about the harmful effects of smoking, the benefits of quitting and how to deliver effective interventions alongside treatments such as nicotine replacement therapy and Varenicline. As part of the training you will learn;

    • How to provide one-to-one stop smoking support
    • How to arrange for the supply of stop smoking treatment drugs
    • Submitting data in line with the SmokeFree Hull Service
    • Understanding smoking cessation medication uses and side effects
    • How to complete monitoring documents
    • Using a carbon monoxide monitor
    • Relapse prevention

    This session is for people who engage with smokers and their families in their workplace with an additional module on supporting smokers with identified mental health problems.

    This two-and-a-half-hour workshop gives you information about the harmful effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting.

    It also gives you advice on talking to people about their smoking and referring them to specialist services.

    Smoking in Pregnancy Training

    This training is useful for health professionals working with pregnant/postpartum women.

    This ninety minute workshop gives you information about the harmful effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting when working with pregnant women. This training is useful for health professionals working with pregnant / postpartum women e.g. Midwives / Sonography / Neonatal Ward / Doctors / Consultants.

    Topics include:

    • Local/national smoking in pregnancy rates;
    • Onward referral pathways/mechanisms
    • Risks of continuing to smoke during pregnancy/benefits of quitting;
    • Harm Reduction;
    • Impact of smoking on the wider family;
    • NICE guidance for NRT use during pregnancy/breastfeeding;
    • Health behaviour change skills and techniques for working effectively with pregnant/postpartum women.

    It also gives you advice on talking to people about their smoking and referring them to specialist services.
