Newham Rise is busy preparing for this year’s Alcohol Awareness Week.
This year Alcohol Awareness Week will be in the week of the 7th to the 13th of July, with a focus on Alcohol and Work.
The size of the problem:
- 19% of our alcohol users are unemployed and seeking work
- 23% of our alcohol users are in regular employment
- 29% of our alcohol users are unemployed and NOT seeking work
Our employment support partners have been instrumental in assisting our service users in securing not just any paid employment but the job of their dream.
IPS Drugs & Alcohol, Our Newham Work, and the DWP Peer Mentoring Programme, alongside BEAM have worked with great commitment and passion in ensuring every one of our clients is given the opportunity to access work.
Since our employment offer was launched with IPS in 2021, 81 service users gained employment whilst in treatment.
One question begs to be answered:
“What stops 29% of service users struggling with alcohol misuse from seeking employment?”
Whilst many of those who use our service deal with alcohol misuse, society at large remains unaware of how past traumatic experiences and present stressors can lead to developing an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
In order to combat stigma and its toll on Newham’s residents, we decided to celebrate this year’s Alcohol Awareness Week with an open day.
On Tuesday, the 8th of July, between 10am and 4pm, the doors at our Canning Town hub will be open to all Newham residents.
Open day Programme:
- Harm Reduction Focus with Liver scan testing, BBV and Hep C testing
- Workshops on employment run by our Partners IPS, DWP and BEAM
- Workshops on Alcohol awareness with Alcohol Trivia
