Zoe's story - Newcastle Stop Smoking + Service

I had started smoking around the age of 13 or 14, in school - when everyone was doing it, being young and daft! I would smoke around 7 or 8 a day, but I had more on nights out. I tried to quit twice in the past before - the first attempt lasted 6 months or so, but then my Grandad passed, and I started again. The second attempt lasted 3 months because I was putting on more weight due to having more nights out. What I learned from these attempts was I just wasn’t ready to quit yet.

I always knew that the service was around, but because I work for the NHS, one day I was given a business card for the service. I knew I wasn’t ready to quit yet - but I kept it in my purse until I knew I was ready.

I’ve just gotten married, and at some point I want to start a family. I wanted to quit to get a head start, so that by the time I might be trying for a baby, I can be smokefree.

I am now 99 days smoke free, with the support from the service and nicotine replacement therapy. I used a vape, which helped this quitting journey, and helped the habit of doing something with my hands. My main cravings were first thing in the morning, getting into my car, or when having a drink. With the vape, I would say I don’t get cravings anymore.

The most valuable support from the service was the frequent check-ins and calls from my advisor - it was very positive encouragement.

Now, my bank balance has really improved - I’m able to save a lot more a month and spend money on other things!

I also find I am sleeping a lot better, and I don’t smell of smoke on my hair or my clothes anymore.

If I could say anything to someone who is wanting to quit - it would be ‘do it’. I would definitely recommend the service as it was really useful to have someone to support you, offering tools and encouragement.
