We hope these frequently asked questions help you to understand more about our service. If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please do ask and we'll do our best to answer.
For young people
All the information you give us is protected by GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), which sets out the legal basis for us holding personal information on people who use our services as well as our staff. You will be asked to complete the ‘Consent, Contact and Confidentiality’ form in your first appointment, and we will go over consent and confidentiality with you.
Our service is completely confidential, so we will not disclose anything you talk to us about unless there is a safeguarding issue, which we would discuss with you before disclosing. If you’re over 13 and do not want anyone to know you are accessing our service, we respect your right to privacy.
Appointments can take place wherever you feel most comfortable, whether that’s at school, alternative education, college, at home, in the community, or over the phone.
We will use your contact preferences, which we will discuss on your first appointment.
We are not here to tell you what to do or force you to stop using drugs or alcohol. We work on whatever goal you have around substances, even if you would just like more information about substances and how to keep safe when using them. If you do choose to access our service, you can stop at any point if you change your mind or feel like you don’t need any more support. We suggest that if you’re unsure about our service, give us a try and see us once. If you think it’s not for you, that’s completely okay; we won’t put any pressure on you to come back.
For professionals and parents/careers
As our service is voluntary, we require consent from young people to engage with us.
If a young person is reluctant to work with us, we encourage you to contact us before making a referral. We can support you as a professional or parent/carer in engaging young people in our service and providing drug and alcohol advice.
We only require consent if the young person is under 13. We use the Gillick and Fraser Competence Guidelines for those 13 and above.
We offer support with all types of drug use, including alcohol. The only substance we do not offer support for is nicotine-based products such as cigarettes and nicotine vapes. For support around these products, we recommend contacting Live Life Better Derbyshire and the public health nurse team.
Unfortunately, we do not currently offer family support. We signpost families to local and national services such as Drugfam.
