Meet Chris and Declan

Two men stood in front of a Change Grow Live van

22 October 2020

The last 8 months have been the most challenging time in our lives and our work. We have all adapted to new ways of working and living that we never dreamed would be a reality at the start of the new year. Chris and Declan share how they are continually adapting and finding solutions daily in these difficult times.

Working in outreach requires a high level of crisis management. Things can collapse very quickly, and it is critical that Chris and Declan can respond to ensure people get the right support.

The lockdown in March meant that the community spaces where people would usually meet were not available. They were still open for collections but there was no longer an opportunity to hang around in a safe and warm environment. People were not allowed to meet up in groups and most had no means to communicate with vital services. When the Government housed people in hotels for their own safety, Chris and Declan rallied round to ensure they not only continued to receive support but also received food parcels and clothing to keep them going.

Do you remember when the Royal Mail stopped delivering during the original Lockdown? Chris and Declan took on the role of delivering scripts all around the county for 12-14 weeks. They have also delivered hundreds of naloxone kits and safe storage boxes and continue to make multiple deliveries daily, all whilst continuing to manage their caseload of high-risk people.

Declan shared how helpful the Christian Fellowship in Sutton has been in hosting an ulcer clinic for people. And where people could not visit the clinic, Chris or Declan would make a home visit with the Tissue Viability Nurse.

Over the last 8 months, there have been some amazing examples of partnership working with local councils, the YMCA and housing providers.

Through all these changes and challenges there has been some positive outcomes. Many people that were temporarily housed in hotels have found permanent homes and have managed to remain free of substances.

In addition to home visits and deliveries, Chris and Declan have been operating out of a van parked at the Mansfield Hub. The van is kitted out as an office space and offers a Covid-secure place where service users can be assessed. This has been a great addition to the service, keeping office staff safe and socially distanced.

There are also plans to use the van to offer Hep C testing and treatment services in the future. Which will be a welcome return for the whole team.
