Find your dream voluntary role this Volunteers’ Week!

At Change Grow Live (CGL) we truly value our volunteers. Sometimes people think that because volunteering is unpaid you won’t learn any new skills or the roles you’ll be given are very basic, but that is so far from the truth. We treat our volunteers in exactly the same way as our staff – so that means a dedicated supervisor to provide guidance; monthly one-to-one supervisions to discuss overall wellbeing and progression; comprehensive training both before and during the placement; and the opportunity at some of our projects to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

Why do we do this? Well, we believe that happy, fulfilled volunteers who feel valued and cherished are more likely to stay with us – indeed, many of our volunteers go on to work with us full time, turning a personal passion into a lasting career. That’s why we take volunteering so seriously – because often we know we’re working with the next generation of recovery workers, counsellors, nurses, consultants and managers who are going to keep striving to provide the best possible care for our vulnerable service users.

It’s also hugely important that our volunteers feel valued. Many of our services hold celebration and graduation events throughout the year where volunteers are recognised for the support and time they have provided to the service. This could be an awards ceremony, where volunteers are given certificates and senior management attend to thank them personally, or it could involve them being taken out for the day somewhere special.

So when better to think about volunteering with us than Volunteer’s Week, a national celebration where charities like Change Grow Live celebrate all our volunteers for the amazing support and numerous hours they have given to us and our service users? We have volunteers doing a huge range of roles – from making our service users feel welcome on reception, to supporting our nurses, providing complementary therapies like acupuncture or running an activity group like football, fishing, cycling or art, there’s bound to be something that sparks your interest.

Volunteering with us could help you beef up your CV, develop your existing skills and gain references for employment. And even if you’re not considering a career, volunteering can still bring so many benefits by helping you meet new people and make friends, gain confidence and improve your self-esteem, feel like a valued member of a team and develop your own local support network. It will also give you the sense of satisfaction that can only come from knowing you are doing something truly wonderful for another human being.

Whether you want to make a difference to the lives of some of the most marginalised people in society, work to make your community a more vibrant, inclusive place, or if you want to get the skills, experience and knowledge you need to kick start your career, we would love to hear from you.
