Speak Out! East Sussex Independent Visitors (IVs) meet with a ‘looked after’ child or young person they are matched with on a monthly basis, usually for between 1 and 3 hours. We ‘match’ IVs to children and young people based on shared interests and the child’s needs, with the child’s wishes and needs prioritised.
IVs visits are activity-based, and are built around what the young person prefers. Activities our young people like to do include going out for a meal and a chat, visiting local attractions, swimming, bowling, trampolining, or going to a park for a picnic.
It’s not all about activities, it’s also about simply being there, as a safe and trusted adult.
IV’s are someone totally ‘independent’ in the young person’s life, distinct from the professionals paid to support them. It makes a real difference to a young person to know they have someone on their side, and who has chosen to be there for them.
In return, you will gain valuable experience, skills and a sense of achievement, as a well as ongoing training, supervision and support.
