"I started working in substance misuse about 18 years ago after completing my psychology degree. I was drawn to this kind of work because several of my friends and relatives had experienced substance use problems and I was able to help them manage their emotions and make changes. This made me want to help others in the same situation. I am an Engagement Coordinator, which means I welcome clients coming into the service, arrange their first appointments and tell them about the different groups going on at the service, like the art group, women’s group and cannabis group, which I facilitate. Some people who use substances are very excluded from their community, so I reassure them that we’re very friendly and the service is confidential. I like working with people - motivating clients to make changes in their lives. I’ve worked with a lot of different clients, and I’ve seen a lot of changes in people. When I see my clients making changes it reminds me that I’m doing the right thing and motivates me to work hard every day."
